FIRE OF LOVE * CANADA/US * 2022 * Dir: Sara Dosa * 99 Mins * Current Rotten Tomatoes Score: 99% *

Katia and Maurice Krafft loved two things — each other and volcanoes. For two decades, the daring French volcanologist couple roamed the planet, chasing eruptions and documenting their discoveries. Ultimately, they lost their lives in a 1991 volcanic explosion, leaving a legacy that forever enriched our knowledge of the natural world. Director Sara Dosa and the filmmaking team fashion a lyrical celebration of the intrepid scientists’ spirit of adventure, drawing from the Kraffts’ spectacular archive. FIRE OF LOVE tells a story of primordial creation and destruction, following two bold explorers as they venture into the unknown, all for the sake of love.

"The result is more than a mere nature documentary. It is one of the most moving and mesmerizing films of the year, a meditation on the wonders of nature and human curiosity."

"The images of walls of fire crashing down with the force of Niagara Falls or exploding into rocks underwater is reason enough to witness Fire Of Love."

9:00 PM / Broadway Theatre

NEPTUNE FROST * RWANDA/CANADA/FRANCE * 2021 * Dir: Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman * 101 Mins * Current Rotten Tomatoes Score: 96%

Multi-hyphenate, multidisciplinary artist Saul Williams brings his unique dynamism to this Afrofuturist vision, a sci-fi punk musical that’s a visually wondrous amalgamation of themes, ideas, and songs that Williams has explored in his work, notably his 2016 album MartyrLoserKing. Co-directed with the Rwandan-born artist and cinematographer Anisia Uzeyman, the film takes place in the hilltops of Burundi, where a group of escaped coltan miners form an anti-colonialist computer hacker collective. From their camp in an otherworldly e-waste dump, they attempt a takeover of the authoritarian regime exploiting the region's natural resources – and its people. When an intersex runaway and an escaped coltan miner find each other through cosmic forces, their connection sparks glitches within the greater divine circuitry. Set between states of being – past and present, dream and waking life, colonized and free, male and female, memory and prescience – Neptune Frost is an invigorating and empowering direct download to the cerebral cortex and a call to reclaim technology for progressive political ends.

"Enchanting and immersive... a war cry that’s simultaneously a galvanizing call to action, a message of hope and a reminder that a different world is possible." - Los Angeles Times

The Thing 40th Anniversary (Sci-Fi Sunday!)

Sunday, August 21, 2022
4:00 PM / Broadway Theatre

THE THING - 40th Anniversary (Sci-fi Sunday Screening) * 1982 * US * Dir: John Carpenter* 108 Min * Current Rotten Tomatoes Score: 83%

As a beautiful black and white Malumute sprints through the pristine snow towards a research station, a Norwegian helicopter fires at it from above in John Carpenter’s deliberation on paranoia and trust (or lack thereof), in his horror-thriller-monster-movie remake The Thing, both the cast and the audience get to reconcile in real time – “Who in the hell would shoot at that beautiful dog and why?” The answers come soon enough, and they are as gruesome as they are terrifying, as Kurt Russell leads a strong ensemble cast (Wilford Brimley, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Ricahrd Masur, Peter Maloney, T.K. Carter, Joel Polis, Charles Hallahan, Donald Moffat and Thomas Waites) that fight for their survival against an alien life form that has assimilated into the dog’s DNA, and remains alive on a cellular level, even after the dog is incinerated – searching for a living host. With its in-camera special effects that moved the needle forward in that art form, while raising the bar on what remakes should aspire to, The Thing stands as Carpenter’s masterpiece, and continues to influence filmmakers both young and old, in this claustrophobic whodunit.

“The scariest movie I ever saw was John Carpenter’s The Thing” – John Sayles

“The Thing is a peerless masterpiece of relentless suspense, retina-wrecking visual excess and outright, nihilistic terror.” – Adam Smith, Empire Magazine

In a remote village in Costa Rica, 40-year-old Clara endures a repressively religious and withdrawn life under the command of her mother. Her uncanny affinity for creatures large and small allows Clara to find solace in the natural world around her. Lost Highway (2022 Janus Films Restoration)

Friday, August 26, 2022
7:00 PM / Broadway Theatre

LOST HIGHWAY * 1997 * US * Dir: David Lynch * 134 Mins

“We’ve met before, haven’t we?” A mesmerizing meditation on the mysterious nature of identity, Lost Highway, David Lynch’s seventh feature film, is one of the filmmaker’s most potent cinematic dreamscapes. Starring Patricia Arquette and Bill Pullman, the film expands the horizons of the medium, taking its audience on a journey through the unknown and the unknowable. As this postmodern noir detours into the realm of science fiction, it becomes apparent that the only certainty is uncertainty.

From Janus Films: "Lost Highway is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.39:1. Supervised by director David Lynch, this new digital transfer was created in 4K resolution on a Scanity film scanner from the 35 mm original camera negative. The near-field remaster of the original 5.1 soundtrack was made from the 35 mm magnetic track and mixsupervised by Lynch and rerecording mixer Ronald Eng"

"Lynch brings the movie’s febrile and violent artifice to life in visual compositions of a poised, painterly authority and interrupts them with quick bursts of hallucinatory frenzy." - The New Yorker
