“Nvotová is well versed in the language of the horror film, and some scenes echo the early work of Neil Jordan, but go much further in their hallucinatory concatenation of the forest wild and the monstrous feminine.” – Eye for Film

FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN - Special Anaglyph 3D Screening! (Dark Bridges Film Festival)

Saturday, June 3, 2023
7:30 PM / Broadway Theatre

FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN * Spain * 1973 * Dir: Paul Morrisey * 94 Min

Special 3d Anaglyph screening! Old-School 3D shades included with ticket cost!

A delectably gory and cynical social satire from acclaimed filmmaker Paul Morrissey (BLOOD FOR DRACULA), FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN is among the most original and transgressive interpretations of Mary Shelley’s classic novel. Baron von Frankenstein (Udo Kier, SUSPIRIA), with the help of his bizarre assistant Otto, is determined to create a new master race. To achieve his objective, he constructs two perfect “zombies” from an assemblage of body parts, intending them to mate. Meanwhile, complications ensue as Nicholas, a farm hand, begins an affair with the Baron’s sexually frustrated wife all while searching for his missing friend Nicholas (Joe Dallesandro, CRY BABY), whose head and brain have been used for Frankenstein’s male “zombie.” Upon its release, FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN became an immediate midnight and cult movie sensation. Now, the movie has been newly restored from its original negative!

“The blood splashes as noisily as an open fire hydrant.” – New York Times

“This delightfully melodramatic 3D film is a lurid camp classic. Complete with scathing class critique, gorgeous long takes, and hot Udo Kier, it’s something of a “see it to believe it” film that could never be made now.” – Horror Queers Podcast

Baron Samedi drinks rum, smokes cigars and chases after mortal women. His wife, Maman Brigitte, is the red-haired Celtic goddess “Brigid” of Irish mythology, adopted in Haiti as their goddess of Death. Women seek her for protection–and justice. Bridget O’Brien is a red-haired waitress and burlesque dancer at a Van Nuys dive bar. She is exploited by her boss, her boyfriend and finally a sleazy attorney who attacks her–only to have her arrested for assault. Then comes the abusive prison matron. Finally, Bridget attempts to take her life. But Baron Samedi intervenes, thinking her the reincarnation of his disappeared wife. Bridget is empowered as a “Valentine vampire.” “What is that?” she asks. “Oh, you shall see!” says the Baron. Blood tastes good, but is not enough–she must feast on the hearts of evil-doers.

“Director Richard Elfman sends prospective audiences into the gonzo world of his latest creation. Bloody Bridget is bloody good fun!” – Film Threat

“Bloody Bridget is a film that fans of Richard Elfman’s work will absolutely love.” – Cinema Crazed

Director/Writer Richard Elfman Bio Richard was born in the Watts district of inner-city Los Angeles. Richard dropped out of college to perform and record as an Afro-Latin percussionist and he wrote/performed/directed with the San Francisco’s legendary drag theatre group, the “Cockettes.”

He moved to Paris in the early 1970s to perform musical theatre with the Grand Magic Circus, produced by Peter Brook of the Royal Shakespeare Company.” His younger brother Danny Elfman joined the troupe and created his first original music. AUNTIE LEE’S MEAT PIES - Midnight Mayhem (Dark Bridges Film Festival)

Saturday, June 3, 2023
11:55 PM / Broadway Theatre

AUNTIE LEE’S MEAT PIES * USA * 1992 * Dir: Joseph F Robertson * 100 Min

Taking a simple premise and turning it into an increasingly bloody and hallucinogenic nightmare, Joseph F. Robertson’s (THE CRAWLING HAND) AUNTIE LEE’S MEAT PIES heaps on gruesome kills with a healthy side of pitch black humor. Graced with a cast as strange as the film itself, among them Pat Morita (THE KARATE KID), Michael Berryman (THE HILLS HAVE EYES), and Karen Black (TRILOGY OF TERROR, HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES) as Auntie Lee, this would-be midnight movie has been newly restored in 4K from its 35mm original camera negative.

“AUNTIE LEE’S MEAT PIES is a grab bag of our favorite Trash Cinema elements lovingly and cheaply assembled for our consumption. It’s tasty, greasy, guilty pleasure well worth sinking your teeth into. This puppy seems like the perfect flick to watch…’ – Trash Cinema Collective

“Utterly ridiculous but undeniably fun, AUNTIE LEE’S MEAT PIES is a tasty dish from the 90s that is just as good reheated.” – Morbidly Beautiful

Charlemagne’s army is devastating the Pyrenees. In an attempt to challenge this onslaught, the highlander leader of the valley asks for help from the ancestral gods of his lands, whose disappearance, brought about by the arrival of Christianity, is imminent. After swearing a blood oath, he manages to defeat the enemy in exchange for his life. But before his death, he makes his son, Eneko, promise that he will be a good leader for the valley.

Years later and now a grown man of Christian faith, Eneko is preparing to fulfill his promise when, in strange circumstances, his father’s buried body and the treasure captured from the Franks disappears, casting serious doubts on his lineage. If Eneko is to fulfill his destiny, he will have to recover them and so he enlists the help of a young, local, pagan woman called Irati. The two of them will have to journey deep into a strange and inhospitable forest, where everything that has a name exists.

“We don’t get enough films like Irati, ones that keep the story grounded to a place and time that is unique and real, a place we can understand from our own corner of the world, while still swept up in the amazing sights, monsters, gods, and legends it brings us.” – Screen Anarchy

“A thrilling adventure, a deeply strange and distinctive fairy tale, and the kind of love story that would have J.R.R. Tolkien’s quill all aquiver, it’s thoroughly magical.” – The Wee Review

The family’s new living situation will continue to go rapidly downhill, until it literally becomes a matter of life and death, leading to a dramatic denouement, which will take place on the hottest night of the century.

“The Elderly (Viejos), the second feature film from Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez, the duo of Spanish directors who brought us the goopy sci-fi horror flick The Passenger (La pasajera) last year, is a mysteriously wicked horror that starts off as a tale of supernatural residency and influence on our grandparents. Hold on though, because Cerezo and Gómez have more in store for you – truly unexpected things” – Screen Anarchy

“… it’s slow-burn at first, as we get to know the characters. However, I can assure you that the final minutes are all kinds of craziness, […] the ending of The Elderly is just very intense” – Heaven of Horror

Werckmeister Harmonies * HUNGARY * 2000 (2023 Restoration) * Dir: Béla Tarr and Ágnes Hranitzky * 145 Mins * Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 98%

One of the major achievements of twenty-first-century cinema thus far, Béla Tarr’s mesmeric parable of societal collapse is an enigma of transcendent visual, philosophical, and mystical resonance. Adapted from a novel by the celebrated writer and frequent Tarr collaborator László Krasznahorkai, Werckmeister Harmonies unfolds in an unknown era in an unnamed village, where, one day, a mysterious circus—complete with an enormous stuffed whale and a shadowy, demagogue-like figure known as the Prince—arrives and appears to awaken a kind of madness in the citizens, which builds inexorably toward violence and destruction. In thirty-nine of his signature long takes, engraved in ghostly black and white, Tarr conjures an apocalyptic vision of dreamlike dread and fathomless beauty.
