RITA / Guatemala / 2024 / Dir: Jayro Bustamante
Rita, a 13-year-old girl played by Giuliana Santa Cruz, ends up in a girls’ protective custody facility after escaping a terrible home filled with abuse, hoping to find freedom in the city. In her crowded section, the other girls talk about a prophecy claiming that a warrior angel will come to rescue them from their harsh lives of poverty, confinement, and forced prostitution. When Rita receives her own pair of wings, just like the other girls, she faces the challenge of figuring out if she’s the one meant to fulfill the prophecy and how far she’s willing to go to expose the truth about what’s happening in the facility.
After the international hit LA LLORONA (2019), director Jayro Bustamante blends elements of mythical fantasy with themes of childhood innocence and female friendship. He also taps into the deep emotional impact and trauma of a story rooted in a tragic real-life incident, where 41 young women tragically lost their lives in a fire at a Guatemalan orphanage in 2017.
