THE GESUIDUOZ / JAPAN / 2024 / Kenichi Ugana / 93 mins
Hanako (Natsuko) has one dream. Before she joins the ‘The 27 Club’, dying alongside her idols Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison at the age of 27, she needs her horror-themed punk rock band The Gesuidouz to perform at the Glastonbury Festival. With time running out her desperate plea to their useless manager sends them to a farm in rural Japan to focus on crafting one big hit song that will catapult them to stardom. Will the fresh air and hard labour of the farm propel Hanako to her ultimate yet tragic goal?
Indie director Kenichi Ugana (we screened VISITORS – COMPLETE EDITION last year!) is back with a lo-fi heartfelt tribute to the creative process, with all its frustration, tedium, and flashes of revelation. Also, a dog that talks. Never has punk rock revelled in such quirky and enduring characters, anchored by Natsuko’s brilliantly relatable performance as the frustrated artist striving to create something from the heart, something that is true. You’ll laugh, you’ll cheer, you’ll demand an encore from THE GESUIDOUZ!
