Dead Lover/ Canada/ 2025/ Dir: Grace Glowicki/ 82 Min
“Dead Lover is one of the most exuberantly and defiantly crazy films I have EVER seen.”
— Matthew Rankin, filmmaker (Universal Language)
Love never dies — but it will start to smell weird.
Writer-director Grace Glowicki resurrects the spirit of homegrown weirdness with DEAD LOVER, a deliriously gothic rom-com about a gravedigger (Glowicki) whose odour repels all suitors, until a foppish admirer (Ben Petrie) with a stench fetish romances her. Their graveyard fling spirals into full-blown necromantic mania when tragedy strikes, leaving her to piece love back together one finger at a time. What follows is a wild, beating-hearted resurrection of the Canadian absurd: equal parts Frankenstein and Guy Maddin-esque fever dream.
DEAD LOVER emerges as a defiantly Canadian phantasmagoria, a DayGlo resurrection of passion, pastiche, and perverse romanticism. With this riot of gore, giggles, and graveyard glamour, Glowicki proves that the heart of Canadian cinema is still beating loudly, and from six feet under.
