Sweetness / Canada/ 2025/ Dir: Emma Higgins/ 93 Min
Her mom is dead (bummer!), her dad is a cop (gross!), and her dad’s girlfriend won’t stop trying to bond with her (ugh!), but tonight, none of that matters — 16-year-old Rylee is off to see her all-time favourite band, Floorplan. Heading home in the post-show glow of an incredible concert, a chance encounter has starstruck Rylee accepting a ride from Floorplan frontman (and total dreamboat!) Payton Adler. It quickly becomes apparent that her rockstar crush is a dysfunctional drug addict, and after his impaired driving results in a crashed car, Rylee decides to take him home, determined to get him clean. She may be shy, unpopular, and inexperienced, but there’s one thing Rylee’s confident in — Payton needs her, whether he likes it or not. But even with the best of intentions, her plan to help him turn his life around soon takes a dark and sinister turn as Rylee becomes hell-bent on turning her teenage fantasies into reality.
With her feature debut SWEETNESS, writer/director Emma Higgins delivers a dark and captivating coming-of-age thriller that keeps the disturbing twists coming and never takes its foot off the pedal. Though comparisons to 1990’s MISERY are undoubtedly expected, SWEETNESS stands strong on its own, elevated by top-notch performances from Kate Hallet (WOMEN TALKING) and Herman Tømmeraas (RAGNAROK), and bolstered by a talented supporting cast of familiar Canadian faces — including Aya Furukawa (THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER), Justin Chatwin (ANOTHER LIFE), Amanda Brugel (THE HANDMAID’S TALE), and Steven Ogg (DARK MATCH).
