BOOKWORM / New Zealand / 2024 / Dir: Ant Timpson / 96 mins
Eleven year old Mildred (Nell Fisher, EVIL DEAD RISE) lives with her mother in New Zealand and in the adventures of her many books, creating her own excitement out of her rather dull reality. When a tragic accident puts her mother in the hospital the father she never knew (Elijah Wood, THE LORD OF THE RINGS/YELLOWJACKETS) shows up from America in the form of an utterly mediocre illusionist intent on finally helping out. Mildred convinces him to accompany her on a wilderness camping adventure, though her true motive is to track down the illusive Canterbury Panther, as proof of its existence grants her the cash prize, she needs to help her mother and return her life to normal.
Writer/director Ant Timpson (COME TO DADDY) returns to collaborate once again with Elijah Wood in this utterly delightful PG-rated family film shot in the stunning far reaches of the New Zealand wilderness. The chemistry between Fisher as the confident and snarky daughter to Wood’s hapless but trying his best delinquent father is off the charts. This is a smart and joyous journey that will leave you smiling from ear to ear!
