Piggy (Dark Bridges Film Festival - 19+)

Wednesday, June 1, 2022
8:15 PM / Broadway Theatre

PIGGY * 2022 * SPAIN * Dir: Carlota Pereda * 90 Min * Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 90%

During the sweltering summertime of rural Spain, Sara carries an extra load of teenage agony due to the perpetual bullying from her peers. She’s also an outsider at home—her parents and little brother just don’t understand her—so, feelings internalized, she’s often found buried in her headphones, drowning out her surroundings. One day, Sara’s usual solo dip at the local pool is disrupted by the presence of a mysterious stranger in the water and an exceptionally grueling bout of abuse at the hands of three girls. But, in a strange twist of fate, along the way home Sara witnesses her bloodied tormentors being kidnapped in the back of the stranger’s van.

In Carlota Pereda’s strikingly bold and ominous feature adaptation of her award-winning 2018 short film, Sara must decide whether to cooperate with the police and parents’ questioning about the kidnappings, or take her own, unbridled path—while also discovering the power of desire and belonging, and the distinction between revenge and redemption.

“A stark but thrilling condemnation of bullying.” – Film School Rejects

“PIGGY smartly mashes up thriller, rural drama and comedy elements into a lovingly-crafted, potently atmospheric, and thought-provoking whole — with bucketsful of horrible blood thrown in for good measure.” – Screen Daily

Shot in The Dark (Dark Bridges Film Festival - 19+)

Wednesday, June 1, 2022
10:15 PM / Broadway Theatre
SHOT IN THE DARK * 2022 * USA * Dir: Keene McRae *

Lawton, Nevada’s once successful writer—now small-town pariah—William Langston, fights for his life as the final victim of a serial killer. Over the course of one day, William is captured and tortured. The pain launches him into the past where he is forced to confront his unresolved trauma of ‘love lost’ and the actions that led him into this trap.

“Assured, compelling, and ultimately disconcerting Shot in the Dark is a beautifully crafted deconstruction that broods with a calm intelligence rarely found in such a popular subgenre.” – The People’s Movies

“It’s remorseless, unyielding and will likely linger with you long after it finishes: the kind of watch that – for better or worse – requires a long shower afterwards, with a dirtiness that drills down into the marrow of your bones, and chills your very soul.” – Moving Pictures Film Club

As a serial killer stalks the city, Julia – a young actress who just moved to town with her boyfriend – notices a mysterious stranger watching her from across the street in this terrifying thriller.

“Genre fans will recognize the devices Okuno employs and suspect how they’ll pay off, and the director skillfully teases those expectations… and keeps us off-balance throughout.” – Rue Morgue

“A film that sustains a viable ambiance of dread simply via someone looking out the window and shopping for groceries.” – The Hollywood Reporter

When they take refuge at a holiday camp in the coastal region of Sine-Saloum, they do their best to blend in with their fellow guests; including a mute named Awa, with secrets of her own, and a policeman who may be on their tail, but it’s Chaka who happens to be hiding the darkest secret of them all. Unbeknownst to the other Hyenas, he’s brought them there for a reason and once his past catches up to him, his decisions have devastating consequences, threatening to unleash hell on them all.

“Strap in; Jean Luc Herbulot’s Saloum is nothing less than 84 minutes of pure African genre mayhem, with little interest in pausing long enough for you to catch your breath.” – Film International

THE DRUID'S HAND" A Short Supernatural Horror Film

An ostracized town priest and his acolyte face the ramifications of their dark past. Guilt turns to paranoia as evil ignites their once peaceful town.

Mitch Oliver, Jesse Sawitsky and Tara Oliver spent the early part of 2021 developing this project in order to fulfill their dream of making a Saskatchewan-based horror film. They wanted to bring an exciting opportunity to their province while also showcasing the underestimated talent and cinematic landscapes that Saskatchewan has to offer. These three collaborators launched a Kickstarter campaign that reached its target goal within 30 hours of running - which would go on to raise 189% of their goal as well as being featured on the front page of the popular crowdfunding website. This resulted in an outpouring of support from the province - with over 200 Kickstarter contributors, alongside local and national news coverage.

Sexy Killer (Dark Bridges Film Festival -19+)

Friday, June 3, 2022
11:55 PM / Broadway Theatre

SEXY KILLER * 2008 * SPAIN * Dir: Miguel Martí * 100 Mins *

A serial killer is loose at a medical school in Spain, and the police have no clue who is responsible for the carnage. Certainly, nobody suspects Bárbara, a sexy, fashion-obsessed student with a hunger for blood that can’t be satiated by what she gets in anatomy class. Killing has become a hobby for Bárbara, who would just as easily suffocate an unsatisfactory one-night stand as she would slice the throat of a peeping tom.

Festival Director’s Statement You might be asking yourself, why is the closing film of a festival in 2022 the 2008 Spanish Horror Comedy SEXYKILLER: YOU’LL DIE FOR HER… the answer is simple this is one of the movies that help drive the creation and development of the Dark Bridges Film Festival. In 2008 I saw SEXYKILLER with a packed Toronto International Film Festival Midnight Madness audience. My experience that night drove me in my passion to bring that experience to Saskatoon. Almost 14 years later we are finally able to screen SEXYKILLER. Tracking down movies that do not have distribution in North America can be challenging and this has been one of the most difficult. But with a bit of luck we were finally able to secure the rights to show this chaotic madcap horror movie and it is my hope that we have as much fun at our midnight screening as I had in 2008.

“The strength of Sexykiller is not its brutality or its gore or its (god forbid) plot. No, the strength here is that is big, bold, bright and colourfully shallow entertainment. It is the candied apple version of David Fincher’s Fight Club (complete with fourth wall breaks and CGI assisted magazine spread walk throughs) all re-purposed as an a love-letter genre spoof. ” – ScreenAnarchy

“The gory murders are inventive and hilariously yucky (a slow spiked heel through the temple was probably my favourite moment in the entire film), and the acting is just hammy and goofy enough. The film is campy, totally outlandish and really fun.” – TheyShootActorsDontThey
