Welcome to Krypto Peak, a wooded wonderland infamous for its sightings of cryptids, and the disappearance of renowned cryptozoologist Barbara Valentine, missing now for three years after chasing down one of these mysterious creatures. When Kay Hall (Chloe Pirrie, BLACK MIRROR/THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT) strays from a group of women on a nature hike on the Peak and encounters ‘something’, she seemingly forgets who she is, but decides that finding this missing scientist is paramount to understanding what happened to her. As she returns to the Peak and its surrounding area, she discovers a number of other lost souls and cryptic clues to this mystery, but exactly is she really searching for?
Director Kourtney Roy and writer Paul Bromley’s first feature film thrives on the margins of your typical mystery or journey of self-discovery, keeping your guessing as to what the outcome could possibly be. Vibrant and thoughtful in equal measure, darkly comedic and surreally erotic, KRYPTIC is (somewhat) grounded by its underlying journey of a woman’s empowerment and self-discovery in the face of harsh reality, and a testament to the power of myth in our everyday lives.
