PÁRVULOS / Mexico / 2024 / Dir: Isaac Ezban / 118 mins
It’s a coming-of-age tale told in the darkest of ages. Mexican genre specialist Isaac Ezban (Evil Eye, The Similars) is back with their most horror-centric fable yet, drawing inspiration from their personal hero, the early works of Guillermo Del Toro. A film seven years in the making it tells the story of three young brothers living alone in a remote cabin. Left to fend for themselves the brothers are left to defend their home from invaders and wanderers, with the added threat of religious zealots roaming the woods. Never mind that hidden in their basement is a terrifying secret that they’ve been living with for some time. A very personal film for Ezban, the filmmaker drew from their life as one of three brothers, and the fears and concerns a parent has when they start raising a family of their own. Peppered with dark humor, riddled with fearful moments, and employing awesome practical gore effects prepare to experience the highs and lows of the post-apocalyptic world as Ezban imagines it.
