Dead Talents Society / Taiwan / 2024 / John Hsu / 110mins
John Hsu’s supernatural horror comedy has a lot of fun with the many tropes of the Asian horror region. Some of it may fly over your heads but you’re having too much fun laughing that it doesn’t matter if you miss a cultural reference or two. What’s important is that the main ones hit, they hit oh so well. Our story centers on an amateur ghost who must get her ghost license and enter her post-life career of professional scaring. She teams up with a spooking legend in order to learn to be good at the craft quickly. For if she doesn’t succeed, she will be deleted forever. Timid by nature, not much changes when she enters the cut-throat world of commercial spooking where you’re only useful as long as your relevant. Something that the living can relate to, unfortunately. In between playing up the tropes and the laugh out loud moments Hsu’s movie about the spirit world still has a beating heart – compassion and caring is not just for the living.
With short film The Companions.
