Saxophone Serenade
This program highlights the versatility and character of the Saskatoon Concert Band, with a special focus on the saxophone. Featured soloist Gerard Weber will take centre stage in Peter Meechan’s Fenix Blue and J. Demersseman’s Carnival of Venice, works that showcase both lyrical sensitivity and virtuosic flair.
The concert also includes a variety of well-loved and dynamic selections, including Atlantic Avenue, Strike Up The Band, and the spirited overture to La Cambiale di Matrimonio by Gioachino Rossini. Audiences will also enjoy Julius Fučík’s Florentiner March, the classic stylings of Sinatra in Concert, and Robert Jager’s energetic Shivaree.
Gerard Weber brings a distinguished and international performance background to this program. He has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across Canada, the United States, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, and has performed with ensembles including the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, the Regina Symphony Orchestra, and the University of Florida Orchestra. Based in Saskatoon, Weber is an active performer, private instructor, and sessional lecturer at the University of Saskatchewan. He recently completed his PhD in Musicology at the University of Western Ontario, specializing in the music of the Middle Ages. Locally, he is a frequent collaborator with organizations such as the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, the Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra, the North Saskatchewan Wind Symphony, and the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival.
This is Gerard's second appearance as a soloist with the Saskatoon Concert Band. He is the first recipient of the Mécénat Musica Saskatoon Concert Band Award.
