The Woman King (2022) stars Viola Davis as the general of the Agojie, an all-female regiment in the West African Kingdom of Dahomey. The film received positive reviews from critics, but what did the historians think?
Before the screening, Richard Oware, a PhD candidate in the Department of History, specializing in the history of witchcraft in Colonial Ghana, will offer remarks on how The Woman King intersects gender, power, and social authority in Dahomey. Drawing from his research on witchcraft accusations in Ghana, Richard will show how the Agojie, an all-female regiment in Dahomey, reflected the ways women negotiated agency, vulnerability, and perception in Africa during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
